Why engage with other people at all? Because it's the only way out of narrow hedonism.https://twitter.com/reasonisfun/status/1157058202300833792?s=20 …

I don't think those behaviours are restricted to online conversations. You could have mirror or rage engagements in offline forums too, albeit on a smaller scale.

@EpsilonTheory is basically right about social media: For most people, it's not about exchanging ideas or making a connection.

In theory, the Eightfold Path is not that onerous. It seems practicable by most people. In practice, it gets obscured by self-appointed gatekeepers, which want you to always need them for guidance.

"The Eightfold Path is also called the Middle Way: it avoids both indulgence and severe asceticism, neither of which the Buddha had found helpful in his search for enlightenment." This points to the idea that there might be a big difference between theory and practice:

Perhaps another requirement for a successful religion is to have a goal that's virtually impossible to reach: Live like a saint, become enlightened etc. Since no one has reached that level, no one can criticize the system. No one can credibly say "Hey, Nirvana isn't that great."

I assume these are the components of any other mainstream, theistic religion. The first set of beliefs would be the only one of interest, for the purpose of evaluating the "effectiveness" of the system.

First hypothesis: Budhism is not special. It's just a collection of: - (psychologically advanced) pro-social beliefs - metaphysical beliefs that motivate the pro-social beliefs - "missionary" beliefs, which propagate the entire belief system to new hosts (spread the good word)

Yes, as long as I acknowledge that I am not judging absolutes, but merely using a different conceptual framework - the scientific/rationalist one.

Before I can even begin, I have to deal with the definition of "good". If Buddhism defines Nirvana as the absolute good, and people subscribe to that, is it valid for me to judge it using a different framework?

Another thing I'm interested in is the "logical conclusion" of Budhism: What would happen if everyone was enlightened? Would that even be considered good by true believers in Budhism?

By "positive effect" I guess I mean increased social cohesion and cooperation. Important note: Need some way to distinguish effects due to Budhism peculiarities from effects caused merely by having a shared belief system.

But I don't want to dive into dogma, because I'm not convinced by anything after the first 2 noble truths. What I want to think about is the empirical effect of believing in the Buddhist dogma. Does it have net-positive effect in society?

Two immediate observations: 1) Why is all desire "evil", except the desire to help other people reach enlightenment? 2) Assuming there is a cycle of rebirth, why is ending it good? Nirvana is described as a profound spiritual joy - is that not also a form of attachment?

Let's consider the 4 noble truths, as summarised here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/religions/buddhism/beliefs/fournobletruths_1.shtml …

I've been thinking about Buddhism. How is this belief system self-sustaining?
