What guilt-tripping misogynist crap. My mother was a cleaner: it gave her a crumb of financial independence & paid for eg my school shoes. Hiring a cleaner & paying her (nearly always *her*) well is Wages for Housework in another form. No one asks if it’s acceptable for a man.https://twitter.com/guardian/status/1236572475154223105 …

Is it ever acceptable for a feminist to hire a cleaner? https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2020/mar/08/acceptable-for-feminist-to-hire-cleaner?utm_term=Autofeed&CMP=twt_gu&utm_medium&utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1583655540 …

In last 50 years, many traditional “men’s jobs” ie decorating, DIY, car maintenance have been professionalised & outsourced. No one thinks less of men for not doing them. But if women outsource the “women’s jobs” like childcare & cleaning - so they can work - they’re cold bitches

“Cleaner guilt”, the conclusion of this article that women should clean a shitty toilet as penance for failing at her female duties, is regressive crap. It’s: “make me a sandwich, bitch” except a WOMAN is saying it. In the goddamn Guardian.

Anyway Happy International Women’s Day. Feel no guilt for paying for women’s time to do labour which is normally invisible & unpaid.✊

I note the Guardian scribe only wants to pay slave rates though.

Creates employment, freedom and independence. My mum also worked as a cleaner when we were small. No one feels guilt about hiring a gardener or a roofer.

💯. This work is only dirty because it’s women’s work (or you live like pigs in which case I have other news for you). Always paid my cleaners well, always treated them with gratitude and respect, never once felt guilty.

Thanks for this. It took me ages to get a cleaner because of attitudes like this. Best decision I made!

...I would add that my first cleaner was a man and he was amazingly good! He also used to ask if he could feed the birds as he lived in a flat and enjoyed being able to look out on our garden whilst he worked.

Well said. I pay and treat my wonderful woman well. A shock recently when she told me - after being off sick with an ankle injury - that clients of 10 years had terminated her hours, including a household in Highgate where she went every day and was the backbone of her income 🤷🏻‍♀️

That cleaner has to go home and clean her own house (unpaid) after she's done with yours FFS so has to do it twice. You aren't in anyway helping reduce her unpaid labour or the unpaid labour of any woman.
