What guilt-tripping misogynist crap. My mother was a cleaner: it gave her a crumb of financial independence & paid for eg my school shoes. Hiring a cleaner & paying her (nearly always *her*) well is Wages for Housework in another form. No one asks if it’s acceptable for a man.https://twitter.com/guardian/status/1236572475154223105 …

In last 50 years, many traditional “men’s jobs” ie decorating, DIY, car maintenance have been professionalised & outsourced. No one thinks less of men for not doing them. But if women outsource the “women’s jobs” like childcare & cleaning - so they can work - they’re cold bitches

“Cleaner guilt”, the conclusion of this article that women should clean a shitty toilet as penance for failing at her female duties, is regressive crap. It’s: “make me a sandwich, bitch” except a WOMAN is saying it. In the goddamn Guardian.

Anyway Happy International Women’s Day. Feel no guilt for paying for women’s time to do labour which is normally invisible & unpaid.✊

Let's ask the question "is it ever acceptable for a man to hire a gardener?" and compare the replies.

Just when you think the Guardian has reached peak middle-class wank, it always manages to go one better. Watch out for the next installment - "Is it ever acceptable for a feminist to have her organic avocado crushed by someone on a zero-hours contract?".

I'm baffled by women friends who say they feel guilty about having a cleaner.

A large part of the work we do could be classed as 'advanced DIY'. So it could be asked if it's acceptable for a man to hire a builder? Professionals are hired to do things customers are unwilling or unable to do. 🤷‍♂️

Indeed. But t's not just about unwilling or unable, it's also comparative advantage. I don't mind doing housework or fixing drains, but if I instead dedicate that time to working as a financial executive, I can pay for cleaners and plumbers and much more besides.
