it’s a disservice to all forms of history-making that don’t rely on archival sources, but also because it glosses over the multiple ways in which archives have already been changed & framed before a historian photographs them.

The digital capacities of both institutions & individuals is definitely impacting on how History gets done, & there is a lot to unpack about how that happens. But the discussion isn’t well-served by casting the analogue archive as the spiritual home of the past, not only because

This is a fascinating example of how framing the archive as a place of pilgrimage & purity shapes an antagonistic narrative about the impact of technology on historical practice, & also elides the archive as a place *of* technology.

In case this hasn’t crossed the paths of UK & people; this is a great (free!) resource for teaching on community, participation, engagement, oral history & archival practices

And so now onward into 2020, which promises such delights. The Mirror and the Light will finally come out, the most anticipated book of all my life, & there will be a new Susanna Clarke, 15 years after Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. 😆

So I can’t, in all conscience, recommend it yet, & perhaps never, but I have to mention it because by the end I had absolutely fallen for Laurent & Damon & their world.

Finally, a special mention. In 2019 I read & adored The Captive Prince trilogy by C.S. Pacat, an intense fantasy reminiscent of Dorothy Dunnett & Guy Gavriel Kay. But. It’s an intensely problematic book, in which sex slavery plays a big part, & I’m not done thinking that through.
