"The reality is that we need a nuclear deterrent. It is in Germany's interest that we can influence the nuclear strategy that protects us. It would be wise to try that with France as well." This comes from , a high-ranking CDU parliamentarian.

Chaos was the law of nature, order was the dream of man. And in chaos, there is fertility.

A popular joke hanging around for some 25 years or so: The optimist is studying English, the pessimist is studying Chinese, and the realist is studying Kalashnikov.

" The higher the susceptibility to disgust, the more one is prone to authoritarian tendencies; the stronger the exposure to disgusting experiences, the more a person will flee away from liberal values such as openness to diversity. "

" Konrad Adenauer, founder of the modern Christian Democratic Union, was a military hawk, a strong proponent of a democratic Germany in a united Europe, and, like AKK, a devout Catholic. If she becomes Germany’s next chancellor, AKK may take the CDU back to its roots. "

" Their idea: the EU’s founding members (except Italy!) should pursue political union on their own and form a “core Europe” with a common migration and social policy, coordinated budget policies, and strong defense and foreign policy capacities. "

"the rise within liberalism of a parallel current of identitarian thinking. ..the liberal project has shifted from peaceful coexistence among divergent identities to one that seeks hegemony for a single kind of identity—that of the autonomous, self-fashioning individual."

Same poll shows that over two thirds of Russians regard their country as a great power - against less than one third back in 2005. Putin has clearly succeeded in raising nation’s self-esteem. Graph shows clear correlation with military operations in Georgia, Ukraine and Syria.

Three of 14 European countries that were polled would side with Russia over the US in a conflict between the two countries. And all would massively prefer to stay out of it. (Data by /)

I'm relatively serious about this. I don't get why we don't have competing digital ecosystem of superpowers wanting to harm their opponents by giving their dissidents and destabilisers a platform.

Little could the bungling Europeans and the Obama Admin have imagined that the 2011 intervention in Libya & overthrow of Gaddafi would break Libya in half & give Turkey a path to control the energy geopolitics of the Eastern Med. w/ Russia inserting itself in between.

There is no game changer in sight. German-French divisions are substantial: Germany is "liberal", France is "realist"; Germany wants the US to stay, France much less so; Germany is nervous about Russia, France isn't; France is worried about terrorism, Germany about migration. /15

Yet that's not the end of the story. Germans have no choice but to figure out themselves a path ahead in the new, challenging environment, where choices are risky and mistakes not forgiven. They need to reconcile themselves with the idea of power in all its shades.

Germany finds itself increasingly alone, as others are adapting to the new power competition, trying to carve out new roles for themselves. Germany's political DNA and its instincts are anti-power, the country has been perfectly adapted to a post-modern world beyond geopolitics.
