can you look at the structure of a criterion for goodness or beauty and be able to tell whether it originated in "similarity to an ideal"
-

if you replace "beautiful" with "effective" in that last sentence then it starts having content but maybe not before
-
and then it better not be like "effective at what?" "effective at being beautiful"

@VesselOfSpirit (a) causing flourishing (b) elegantly encoding information ? -
@sarahdoingthing hmm. is it really about effectiveness? hacks can be effective but ugly -
@VesselOfSpirit I wonder if it's no more than a reminder that looking at "beauty" is looking at the outward-reaching parts of our brains -
@VesselOfSpirit including their capacity to appreciate elegant/simple encodings of complexity - brute effectiveness doesn't do this -
@sarahdoingthing i think probably things like fit and complexity are part of it and then part is about non-unifiable human reward buttons -
@VesselOfSpirit you can't brute force beauty by optimizing for some reward button (pleasure, longing) but I think you can brute force beauty - 1 more reply
