I don't think it's quality of scientists per se that holds science back

Consider: 1) 1000s of grad students now understand e.g. GR better than Einstein ever did 2) making unis co-ed has probably pushed assortative mating into overdrive. I bet there are way more people alive now who are better at all the specific skills that modern science requires
