it's probably going to take humans (and/or their descendants) less time to conquer the galaxy than it took them to conquer the earth

It'll be close, but I'd guess not. Modern humanity, as defined by genetics, is ~200k years old. (By social behavior? Only 50-75k.) Distance from Sol to the far end of Scutus-Centaurus arm of Milky Way? ~75,000 light-years. You need to be optimistic to expect w/in 200k years.https://twitter.com/VesselOfSpirit/status/1100888720712990720 …

I would assume that if we accelerate the first half of each trip, we decelerate the second half, avg speed <1/2c.

Power consumption is minimized with steady acceleration / deceleration, and it's much more expensive to go fast if you need your power supply onboard. Unless we find it's possible to make efficient fusion plants small enough to fit inside a ship, those power limits are important.

(But I'd think @anderssandberg covers all of the issues with interstellar colonization timelines in the book he's writing.)

economic incentives to go at the highest possible fraction of c are huge. people seem to systematically underestimate long term technological possibilities by a lot and tbh i don't understand why

Combination of linear thinking (miss acceleration), lack of imagination (ramifications often complex), lack of nerve (do you dare to conclude what the calc tells you when it is *weird*?) but also plain lack of interest in "not real" future.

You can travel faster in clean intergalactic space compared to dusty plane of MW (pretty thin; can sidestep it). 50%c likely pretty doable, would not be surprised by much higher. Rockets for acceleration are BAD, use laser push instead.
