i think mostly people don't realize the implication of huge number of stars per galaxy plus huge number of galaxies plus billions of years of time plus very loose limits to technology

I think most people don't realize the difficulty of searching that many stars for life, esp if we don't know what to expect. Sure there's the question of "Where are all the Von newman probes" but you don't need those to launch a solar sail.
