what does the causal arrow from the collapse of civilization to literal human extinction concretely look like? most don't talk about this

like, what do the last million humans die of in cases where the original disaster isn't severe enough to kill them outright

Diseases and starvation is usually the answer

diseases and starvation didn't cause human extinction in the pre-industrial world. why would they cause it in the post-apocalyptic world

Due to the lack of knowledge and production capacity. We are very very far removed from ancestral life patterns. No redundancy layers to fallback from collapse of complexity

Will the last million humans be able to manufacture antibiotics?

it's also sort of difficult to imagine exactly what kind of disaster would leave only a million people behind but wouldn't change the environment drastically. seems very surgical. it happened in "earth abides" and humanity survived, but i doubt "natural disease" is a major xrisk

i didn't mean to assume that only a million people would be left, just that at least a million people would be left. probably many more
