1) Build value in other activities. When things go wrong in your game, you need a buffer. If your game is your entire identity, your focus and drive will be devastated when progress or results aren't where you want them to be. Other hobbies act as a buffer to sustain your esteem.

2) Intrinsic value towards the game. People that make it to the Olympics don't make it because of money or fame; they are sustained out of pure passion and willpower. If your focus is on the payout, motivation will crumble on the climb up. Focus on the passion, not the pay.
