Mostly online people have blunt ways of telling a joke or want to get attention. Luckily that person seemed to be joking, but if that person was trying to discourage you its not a good idea to reply with a comment like that since they will exploit that.

At this point you just have to take everything in a joking way or not give them attention at all. The more you talk about how it discourages you publicly the more people will see something to exploit and get undeserved attention from. Its fine to vent about this, but lessen it.
