“Quand les libéraux sont au pouvoir, nous leur demandons la liberté, parce que c’est leur principe; et, quand nous sommes au pouvoir, nous la leur refusons, parce que c’est le nôtre.” — Montalembert, putting words in the mouth of Louis Veuillot

Wish that all people complaining about Prime Minister Orbán could have listened to his 90 minutes interview-style talk in English about Hungary, Europe, politics etc. Some prejudice bubbles might have been burst

Always interesting to run across the liberal nonargument "Someone once used authority wrong somewhere, therefore authority should not be used," whereas the (more sensible) argument "Someone once used liberty licentiously, therefore liberty should not be used" is never in evidence

  11. From some of the same people who responded to the charge that the House impeachment was a “coup“ by saying that so long as constitutional processes were followed, there could never be an objection from the standpoint of political morality. Either “the system worked” or it didn’t.

Oh no - just remembering we left our intern, Chunter (Harvard College '22) locked in the Updates Chamber. He's been watching the New York Times needle move between Sanders at 33% and Sanders at 34% for well over 14 hours now. We pray he has not gone mad.

  15. Just to reiterate, the problem with “national conservative” Catholicism isn’t that it is inherently objectionable, but that it is a nonideal second-best expedient, hypothesis rather than thesis, and should not be treated as en end in itself.

In a not-too-distant future, “caucuses” and “primaries” will be the names given to elaborate rituals by which a symbolic Enemy of the People is chosen, who the reigning President will then invariably vanquish in minutely choreographed electoral festivities.
