Idea: want to make a persistent F2P (non-premium) sandbox (Terraria, Minecraft, Stardew-ish) game Problem: Persistent servers cost a lot (Nintendo isn't even willing to front the cost on AC) + can't be premium because high friction =/= low CCU = low virality/organic onboarding

Is it really needed to host official servers for games like this? None of the 3 games you mentioned do this except Minecraft (kinda recently) adding Realms which you have to pay for

Yes for balance and economy. Otherwise anyone can just do anything. That defeats the purpose of a global shared economy. Look at AC - people can time travel. Sure most people dont care. Neither does Nintendo. Why? They paid $60.

Okay if you're looking for an MMO experience, that makes sense for sure but then i wouldn't necessarily compare it to the games u mentioned since at that point the experience is wildly different, probably more comparable to Survival games
