• Play a beta prior to release
• Wait to play the game once completed & fully released

Advantages in overwatch were a thing well into owl season 2, Not as much because of skill but rather because of gatekeeping/nepotism. This would still be a thing but definitely limited as players get to know more people from the start (see apex)

Genuinely curious: how many players in OWL season 2 can you think of who were big in beta or the first month or two of OW release?

after a quick glance over former OWL players, im confident saying it helped alot for at least 8, if not 10 people. This is mainly for the western/european scene so could certainly be more
