When was the last time a game came out that allowed the community to make different maps, modes, host their own servers and more, e.g. CS with surf, trikz, bhop, kz even RPG mods like superhero in 1.6... Closest i can think of is Overwatch or Fortnite? Still far off though imo.

I guess what im getting at is that the game essentially just came on an extremely solid engine and freedom from the devs that the community makes their own games within the game (e.g. Surf has little to nothing to do with actual Counter-Strike anymore, just uses engine & models)

I feel Overwatch and Fortnite both have the potential to do similar things, the problem is the devs aren't willing to give full control over these things (mainly server-side stuff) to their playerbase, thus limiting options.

Non-FPS example would be WC3 or partially SC2. Lots of different games/modes/communities formed from these games, i wish that was still a thing nowadays, but the industry is just not in that place (anymore)

Thinking about it, GTA5 probably most recent example with RP, and Arma3 with RP+BR modes (Note: WC3, Arma3/GTA essentially spawned entirely different games/modes: MOBAs, BRs, RP entirely thanks to the freedom modders/communities have in these games)
