It's a crazy system so I've given up even bothering about it.. It's far quicker when your sailing to just ignore it till you die. Then just re spawn back on the bed and carry on..
The whole survival aspect of the game is 100% out of balance currently. Much more efficient to just die and go agane lol. Surviving a lvl 200 Alpha wolf? good luck, hopefully he doesnt spawncamp u :)
