    The pushback we’ve seen this yr against the vast infrastructure of AI (from algorithms to corporations) has been astounding. I mapped these events around key themes we identified through this process, and used trend data to visualize where these conversations might be happening.

    All of these use cases of ML to contain the coronavirus outbreak are good. But don't let this distract you from the fact that these epidemics don't have the market incentives for R&D when poor communities are hit first. This is a health justice issue.

    Friends, I don’t know at all what today’s issue is about yet, my commment is completely general. I for one don’t want to end up like my elderly or late mentors who experience(d) life long *pain* from the ruptures in the movement in the 60s and 70s. Do you?

    Yikes, can we not have so much friendly fire in the NoTechForICE movement? Diversity of tactics is a strength, not something to tear each other apart for.

    Rep. Norma Smith, the leading *Republican* on the House Tech. Cmte, read the ’s 2019 recommendations into the record & is sponsoring bills to put them into practice. Algorithmic justice can transcend political divides. But big tech wants to stop that.

    The AI Profiling Act (House Bill 2644) had an incredibly successful first hearing! Now the fight is on to move it out of policy committee! Huge thanks to my team and colleagues at UW CS, and a massive shout to our champion Rep. Norma Smith!

    Some HIV+ patients in India are stopping medical treatment now that it is being linked to government biometric ID. Many fear being outed as LGBTQ or sex workers. This is such a depressing example of how surveillance disproportionately harms already marginalized groups.

    Personally, not a fan of such surveillance tools. There are safer, cost-effective alternatives that don't alienate marginalized groups. e.g. many HIV patients in India have stopped accessing ART therapy since their care was linked to their Aadhaar ID:
