In total 162,400 American died of COVID, that is 55 times the death toll of 9/11. In Germany the total is 3 times 9/11. (The USA is 4 times larger.) At the moment: 🇩🇪 5 🪦 per day 🇺🇸 1000 🪦 per day Trump:

Early release of our new study is now in GRL. By including the total effect of Arctic amplification (compared to only sea-ice loss), we find a clearer role of Arctic-midlatitude climate linkages. + [Open summary] + [Paper]

Vertical cross-section graph (latitude by pressure (height)) of air temperature trends in ERA5 reanalysis over the 1979 to 2019 period for December-February. This figure is adapted from Labe et al. (2020, GRL).

"Point of no return" on Greenland melt? () Nope. My colleague Richard Alley provides context: "models show...sustained temperature above some threshold will cause..ice sheet to lose most of its mass, but...warming to date..probably not enough"

I like variability, but one day records are just one value, just weather. Still for the other 99% of humanity: a good article about the recent temperature "record" in Death Valley.

I should become better at marketing. We should not have called the federated social network for scientists "FediScience", but the Intellectual Dark Web. But well:

This bullshit about immunity lasting only three months is everywhere tonight. It's a total misunderstanding. What the CDC said: people are unlikely to get reinfected in the first 3 months. What the news reported: people *are* likely to get reinfected after the first 3 months.

If Trump were ruling another country, Americans would say he is butchering his own people. While billionaire-funded Trump, the billionaire-funded Republicans & the billionaire-funded disingenuous pundits keep on fighting for policies to make the massacre worse.

This is a wonderful explainer on how we go from all the different surface temperature measurements to estimates of the changes in global mean temperature. As well as why we do it like that. It is from 2011, but the basics do not change. Very worthwhile.

Trump’s calculated dismantling of USPS proves one thing clearly: He is WELL AWARE that we do not want him as our president. He’s chosen to blatantly cheat and put millions of Americans’ lives at risk in an effort to hold on to power.

Employees of the US government violated the Constitution and lied to Congress and the American people about it. exposed them. This is bigger than him. If he’s punished for his service to the Constitution, there will be more violations of the Constitution, and more lies.

It should be more than clear by now: People who vote Trump in November vote to abolish democracy in America, vote against the founding fathers, vote against the Constitution. Any other policy differences can be resolved later, ending democracy is final.

We still have the tragedy of the commons on a local scale. The owner of a power plant makes a profit by causing harm to others. The new numbers say that all over we become poorer. Theoretically we have democratic national governments to solve this local tragedy.

Air pollution is so damaging that it changes the nature of the global climate negotiations. Investments in climate protection benefit everyone. Cleaner air creates mostly local benefits. Together they are worthwhile even if theoretically other countries would not collaborate.

... that virtually ANY substitution away from fossil fuel combustion is "worth it" when total social costs/benefits are taken into account. Air pollution is so insidious that the market "cost" of FF could be practically $0 & they *still* wouldn't pencil out.
