I have to strongly object to the basic premise in this article. The purpose of a liberal arts education is personal growth and social equality. Liberal: to be free. Why shouldn't an iron worker have it? The solution to a labor shortage is simple: better pay, better conditions.
We should be flexible in the paths we create for students to be successful. This includes vocational tracks and setting up internship programs between high schools and small businesses. I think parents can sometimes overlook what their kids might really want to do with their lives. You can have personal growth and learn about social equality in every day life. You do not need a 4 yr. degree, that will place many in debt for years, to succeed. Debt is not freedom
