The @FCC just voted to repeal #NetNeutrality
even after it's been made clear that there is overwhelming opposition to such a move. @carterforva & @pwcdanica have it right: this is like installing toll lanes on the Internet. 1/

In a world where Internet access has become a vital utility (like water and electricity) as opposed to an optional luxury, we are only going to exacerbate wealth & income inequality when the ISP industry responds to this move. 2/

Communities of color, low income communities, and areas with very few (if any) high speed internet options will be impacted the most (like rural America.) We'll likely see folks having to buy access to important sites and services like we currently have to with cable. 3/

Even worse, there is a chance that certain forms of digital organizing will now be made harder, if not impossible, as ISPs and their corporate backers may charge, slow, or outright block certain platforms and sites that folks use to connect. 4/

We no longer live in an age where folks in our country can get by without reliable and affordable internet access. We no longer live in a world where you can get ahead while ignoring the Internet of Things. Schools require online resources for their students, for example. 5/

And good luck starting a small business if you have to pay not only for Internet access itself, but the specific package(s) necessary to get the right media platforms you need to use. Or the extra money you'll have to pay to be on the "fast lane" to folks to access your site. 6/

No matter how you look at this, it's a huge step back. Congressmen like
@RobWittman signed off on it, too, after receiving five figures from the ISP lobby over the years (he received $57,250.) @RyanSawyersVA @SantanaforVA1@Vangie4Congress@tomhicksva1 & suddarth, take notice.2 réponses 0 Retweet 3 j'aimeAfficher cette discussion
