I am in awe of the millions of demonstrators who have stepped up this week to speak out against police brutality and racial injustice. I wish I could join the demonstrations in my community and throughout Virginia's 1st District, but it would be irresponsible of me to do so.
I am a mother. One of my children is immuno-compromised and has a chronic lung condition. That makes her an extreme risk for COVID-19, and because of that, I have been under a strict quarantine since the beginning of this pandemic.
As much as I want to join with everyone marching for justice, I simply cannot risk my daughter's health. The sheer numbers out in the streets protesting police brutality and demanding justice make my heart full. Though I cannot be with you, I stand with you every step of the way.
