Yesterday was Wear Orange Day for Gun Violence Awareness. In 2013, a young teenager, Hadiya Pendleton, was shot in the back while hanging out with her friends. Her family and friends wore orange for her and we do the same every year since.pic.twitter.com/b7JT9DNPGV
This is the symbol of our fight to end gun violence. This is for Hadiya. This is for a 7 year old boy killed in Pennsylvania two months ago. This is for my cousin, killed when he was 17 years old by a 12 year old. This is for all the other children and lives lost to gun violence.
We have had organizations like the NRA getting involved in our elections for years so they can keep our country hostage as they take more and more money at the risk of lives. I'm disgusted that more hasn't been done to keep this money out of politics.
I am a strong believer in the Constitution. That does cover the right to bear arms and ensure that necessary and responsible regulation is also protected. This does not mean unlimited and all guns for whomever wants them.
We must not allow guns to be in the hands of children, people experiencing mental illness, depression or violent offenders. Virginia just experienced groundbreaking legislation on gun reform and this is a reflection of the change in our society when we say: Enough is Enough!
This is why I support the legislative proposals of @Everytown and @MomsDemand. I support repealing gun industry immunity. Gun violence survivors should have the ability to challenge these organizations and companies in court. They should no longer have preferential treatment.
