What inspired that event? Police brutality. Queer communities were sick and tired of police raids on the few spaces that welcomed them and allowed them basic dignity, like the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village.

So what did they do? They rioted. They took to the streets and demanded an end to brutal crackdowns on their neighborhoods and community spaces.

The rights that the LGBTQ community has won over the subsequent five decades were not achieved quietly. They were achieved because people went into the streets and fought for them.

And as we celebrate pride month, it is important to remember that this fight did not end with marriage equality. LGBTQ people still face systemic discrimination in employment, housing and education.

Federal law still does not prohibit firing people because of their gender identity. It does not forbid housing discrimination. It does not guarantee equal opportunities for transgender youth.
