Native American tribal governments are going to court. Starting with the kidnapping of Pocahontas on Stafford County’s Marlborough Point Peninsula, Europeans and the U.S. have been mistreating American Indians for more than 400 years.

This mistreatment is a long and painful one, rooted in centuries of discrimination, neglect, greed, and violence. Our ancestors robbed Tribal Nations of more than a billion acres of land, seizing resources, desecrating sacred sites and suppressing Native languages and religions.

Native history is American history, and we must be honest about our government’s responsibility in perpetuating these injustices for centuries. Washington owes Native communities respect and so much more.
