I'll put it very plainly - as a mother of six daughters, it is gut wrenching and infuriating to see the families being separated at the border. People seeking asylum qualify under the terms of the internationally recognized 1951 United Nations Refugee Convention.

We should afford them the rights guaranteed by the said agreement. Separating parents and children at the border is barbaric. We must find ways to fix our immigration system.

We must honor the fundamental values of treating people coming to this country with dignity and respect. People seeking safety for their children, should not be put in riskier situations while seeking protection.
