This is so great. I'm happy for NuScale. Small, modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) are getting a lot of research attention lately. mPower (B&W), TerraPower, and Terrestrial Energy are others to keep an eye.

I'd like to see a listening test comparing Tidal's FLAC files with its 320 kbps AAC files. I'm pretty sure that humans won't be able to tell the difference. 320 kbps AAC is luxurious, and probably a waste of bandwidth. 128 or 192 kbps should be CD/FLAC quality.

Donating money to government schools is worse than lighting it on fire. I'm stunned Ripple would do it, just as I was stunned when Mark Zuckerberg wasted $100 million on NJ government schools. He seemed surprised at how it made no difference in outcomes.

Somehow, seemingly out of nowhere, flying cars are becoming a reality. I don't understand what changed in aeronautical engineering, propulsion technology, materials, etc. that made this feasible. It was always out-of-reach 1950s futurism.

I think the US should form an all-female special operations unit, and that they'd be more likely to develop innovative tactics than existing all-male units. The bin Laden raid, for example, could've been performed much better, without using (and leaving behind) a stealth chopper.

In an episode of The Confession Tapes, one of the jurors (female) raved about how sharply dressed the prosecutor (male) was, and that the other female jurors felt similarly. This makes me want to remove style as a variable by having a standard uniform for trial lawyers.

I've followed Carbon Engineering for years, and I hope they succeed. I love the idea of extracting CO2 from the atmosphere and making fuels from it! I predict environmentalists will be less enthusiastic, preferring sacrifices, less consumption, etc.

He's crazy, but I'd like to see Jerry Rice play at age 55 just out of scientific curiosity. What they really need to do is sign . I think he can still ball.

I wish word processors (awful name – should be *writing software*) had Plain English analysis built-in. Also Global English (easier to translate, easier for English learners) and Simplified Technical English. I wouldn't hammer all writing into compliance, but they'd be nice tools

Interesting list of Plain English replacement words. I don't agree with all of them though. e.g. to *discuss* something is not always the same as *addressing* it, and so I'd keep "address" in many contexts.

We put a man on the moon in 1969, and we still can't package baking soda in a reasonable way. We need a plastic jar with a wide-mouth screw-on lid. Resealable vents for fridge deodorization. That's the answer, people. Not a cardboard box with a half-assed punchthrough opening.

This has been a month of confusing news for me. Have we ever been allowed to linger in restaurants or coffee shops without ordering anything? What am I missing here?

This is good news. The Southern Poverty Law Center are some of the worst human beings on the planet.

I'm all for frugality, but I'm puzzled by this controversy. Cabinet secretaries and heads of agencies normally fly coach? I assumed we had private jets for them – they're similar to major corporate CEOs to me. e.g. Intel has their own little airline.

I'm embarrassed that I had no idea this existed. I think it's the fifth largest monolithic telescope in the US. The mirror was finished by the University of Arizona, as usual... We're going to have to check it out.

I don't like it when high-level US government officials write childish books within months of the end of their service. Gates bothered me. Comey bothers me. They're too immature and whiny for the positions they held. Enough with the books. Just serve and move on with honor.

This is a fascinating advance in truly random number generation. For behavioral or biomedical researchers needing to randomize participants, I recommend and . They're good enough for what we do.

Found another ofo rental bike in the Tempe Canal. That's three in about a week. I don't understand the motive here. The perp might know that water will block GPS tracking, but why do this to begin with?

I think it would be supercool to reuse or upcycle cereal boxes as express mailers. Think FedEx envelopes and their counterparts at UPS, the USPS, DHL, et al. They seem to be made of similar weight paperboard. Imagine a Cheerios or Fruit Loops mailer full of important documents.
