The checkmark is universal for verified across all other forms of social media. It tells you they’re verified, and if you don’t know what it means, mousing over it shows that. A grey background on a channels name tells me literally nothing.

If I saw the grey background I’d have assumed it was some half assed attempt to help with legibility of channel names on the platform and not that it’s a verified channel.
