It's intended to make your account more secure and reduce the amount of alt accounts in top 500. I think most people consider it good. ^^
For anyone going for Top 500 next season, make sure you enabled SMS protection now! Devs just confirmed on @A_Seagull 's stream that you must play 50 games with it enabled, you can't wait to add it on the last day.
