Spin current is a subtle phenomenon with some counter-intuitive properties, but it could be the bloodstream of the future storage and computing. In this paper we study it using the formalism which is, in contrast, rather intuitive.

“He was one of the great mathematicians of the 20th century,” a colleague said of Louis Nirenberg, who shared his field's top honor with John F. Nash Jr., he of "A Beautiful Mind." Dr. Nirenberg has died at 94.

This one is from "Quantum Theory of Many-Particle Systems" by A.L. Fetter and J.D. Walecka. The fermionic case (odd frequencies) is left as an exercise for the follower.

I've been largely "off air" because finalizing the thesis has been an insane amount of work. Anyway, let's have a quick look at a summation technique popular in the many-body perturbation theory (at finite temperatures). Because who does not like a nice contour?

The trick is not new, however (and does not necessarily require brain damage to master).

That being said, a lot of research asking very fundamental questions about QM is happening, and it does not necessarily involve large colliders

Fixing the foundations usually comes after a series of breakthroughs, but it is rarely if ever a breakthrough itself. Noone asked me for advice, but my recipe would be: keep solving hard problems and remember that interesting things happen near the boundaries.

Black-body radiation and photoelectric effect were extremely niche problems at the time. Solving them was whay led to upending the entire grand building of classical physics, not the other way around.

Or perhaps they should not, especially if we look at history, as the article suggests we do. Just like if you sit down to write "something great" you are unlikely to make progress, setting out to make advances in the foundations of physics is a dubious goal for anyone.

I wish the authors of "Concrete Mathematics" picked this one for their "definite sum" notation.

As for the reductionist approach to "free will" that the article seems to be assuming the following is a good starting point for learning about the problems with such approach:

The article refers a lot to toy models and gedanken-experiments,but is a bit might on the modern experimental work around testing QM. It would be interested to see a discussion of something like this (Section VI) in the context of the proposed theory

This must be the best illustration to the Pink Floyd lyric: "All movement is accomplished in six stages And the seventh brings return The seven is the number of the young light It forms when darkness is increased by one"

the periodically-forced duffing oscillator induces a flow on the solid torus with some lovely chaotic dynamics. by following a set of initial conditions in the plane over time, you can see the stretching & folding lead to chaos.

Caustic in a teacup. Here's a way to visualise where that familiar nephroid shape comes from. Let (u,v) be point on surface of tea. θ specifies angular coordinate of point on cup where ray reflects on its way from distant light to (u,v).
