It does really feel that if you don't plan on using it with Room and have it create the data sources for you then it's just extra difficult to pull off. It ended up being easier to do my own paging implementation in the end

Outside of parsing RecyclerView scrolling events, much of the work is arguably on the server side (accepting ranges or 'since' ids etc). Do you not plan to use Room eventually?

I'm currently using GraphQL with Prisma cloud which makes paging super easy to do server side (like a couple lines of code easy). Apollo-android has its own SQL-backed disk cache so I don't really have a need for Room right now.
