@chrisbanes can I declare a theme overlay for a toolbar in my styles.xml directly or do I have to use android:theme on each Toolbar widget?

Try it. Declaring it in your style should work though.

Ah, no that won't work since only the Toolbar class knows what it's defStyleAttr is. Unfortunate side affect of existing APIs.

Right, thought so but wanted to double check. Shame that I have to add that line to every toolbar in my app.
