Has anyone worked out if it's a good thing that private capital gets to decide whether a democratically elected politician can speak directly to the people?

They are a private company in the end. They can do what they want. If they were deemed a public service, like how electricity was in the early 20th century, then they'd be at fault. This is their legal right - Trump is a user like any other and he broke the service rules.
