This is Finland's conversation: 7 mo./ parent. Yet, in the US we have 0 weeks and 12 weeks per parent + coverage for other FMLA needs is controversial. Go Finland! Why can't the US do better than we are? Also, women's leadership matters!

Just up at , some reflections from me on and the bipartisan solution that's out there, as well as some suggestions for Trump to pursue if he's serious about real paid family and medical leave.😀

Our country needs a real policy, like the one I championed in the California State Legislature. What and his supporters are proposing is a loan. That doesn't help . America deserves better!

"When the President says the economy is strong, my question is - strong for who?" is RIGHT that the economy is NOT working for working people

9/9 And, last, this proposal fails to meet the needs of family caregivers and workers with their own serious health issues. (Real covers all family care and personal medical leave needs, like and 8 states + DC.)

8/9 Third, there are serious uncertainties about the ability of the IRS to deliver benefits in real-time when a new child arrives. Providing a new child loan many months after the new child arrives does nothing to address a families’ immediate financial needs.

7/9 Those who do disproportionately do not see the full value of the CTC are disproportionately people of color, families with a single parent and people in rural areas. (Real promotes equity.)

6/9 This is especially true for middle-income families whose net child-related tax benefits did not see a significant increase as a result of the 2017 tax bill and for families who already do not receive the full value of the CTC.

5/9 Without improved access to quality affordable childcare, after school care & family-sustaining wages, it is unlikely that any family who needs $5,000 at the time a new child joins their family will be able to do so without the full value of the CTC over the subsequent decade.

4/9 Second, this proposal requires people to make a calculation about the direness of their current need against the projected direness of their future need. (Real would not require trade-offs & would cover more than new parents, who are only 21% of FMLA-users.)

3/9 First, this is not . It doesn't require new parents to take leave in order to claim the tax credit and does not provide them with employment protections if they do. So 40% of workers without FMLA protections could lose their job if they take this no-interest loan

2/9 To level-set: The CTC-loan proposal allows parents to take a no-interest loan of up to $5,000 when a child is born or adopted, to be repaid by a family accepting a decade of Child Tax Credit (CTC) payments that are reduced by $500 annually.

1/9 Thread reference: I know there's so much to challenge in tonight's speech, but here's more on the not-paid-leave proposal the president mentioned. This is excerpted from my testimony last week:
