9-figure gifts to universities usually fund new medical research centers. Kudos to for doing something very different: increasing graduation rates. That work isn't sexy, but is probably the best use of additional $ in higher ed.

Now out in is something I hope u like 🛑 the Med School Arms Race. We incentive students to craft lavish CVs to get into med. school, but by doing so, are we doing them, our patients, and ourselves a deep disservice? Allow me to persuade you 👇

Reading an article for my class I really hate this. Just give a summary of IC and EC in the paper. Don't make me 2 factor authenticate, find the article, download the supplement and find this within.

Another wonderful piece by . For those applicants who had high school or college jobs bagging groceries, working as a waiter, &c, PUT IT ON ERAS! I know you don't believe me now, but food service has far more relevance to practicing medicine than pipetting in a lab

I wrote back to the Freshman, and gave him honest feedback. And typical of honest feedback, I could tell he was not happy with me

Great piece, aches to read. Adolescence and golden undergrad years punted to tick application boxes (and those meds applications have *specific* numeric thresholds, to be sure).

Absolutely LOVE this opinion piece by at about culture contributing to and it starts young... “I hope, for their sake and ours, that it's the kids who waste their time, wander, and make mistakes who grow up to be physicians—the kind we need.” ❤️

This is so true and really makes you question who we should and should not look up to as med students/residents/trainees.

You did the high school student a favor with your response; the system is quite flawed.

This is a MAJOR problem in Canada too. Constantly having chats with my colleagues about how we want to be doing the things we find fulfilling (hobbies, travel, etc.), but instead feel compelled to build our CVs for fear that we may "fall behind the herd."

Spot on! I think this is a global phenomenon. Here in Spain, applicants have the best grades, but most do not know what they are getting into and/or why (many unaware that external validation is one of the reasons...). Thanks for the great article!

I just wrapped up my first year on our med school's admissions committee and I could not agree more. College is such an important time to figure out who you are and what you value! How does one do that while scheduled 18hrs/day with CV building activities?

This is a terrific piece, Vinay. Unfortunately medicine isn’t the only profession where the “arms race” is occurring. I see stressed out teens in my office all the time who worry that they won’t be able to get in to their dream college if they don’t overachieve.

Another problem is what happens to this well rounded talent and creativity once in med school. It dies. Under the unbearable and crushing burden of memorization.

I think about what the freshman in high school 2017 has to think about, and what I thought about as freshman in high school in 1997

Nice essay by on the med school arms race. I also bagged groceries and spent hours reading books in cafes in high school. It was a shock when I got to Swarthmore and found my classmates had been starting non-profits and doing lab research.

The problem is how we select students. What are the attributes we value, and what are the one's we discount

I honestly felt bad that freshman in high school are not allowed to be... freshman in high school. Why is that the case?
