In 1864, Rebecca Lee Crumpler, a nurse and author, became the first African-American female doctor in the United States. She suffered unimaginable racism and sexism but persisted in doing what she considered missionary service--caring for poor women and children. #BHM #VOA

In 1969, The Black Panther Party began a free breakfast program to feed low-income children: Black Panthers’ Free Breakfast for School Children Program. The program fed tens of thousands of hungry children of all races throughout the country. #BlackHistoryMonth #BHM #VOA

In 1830, the Indian Removal Act was signed, giving the government power to exchange Native-held land. The Choctaw, the first nation to be expelled from its land, made the journey to Indian Territory on foot without food, supplies or help. Thousands died along the way.
