Never forget: centrism like Harry Reid's is partly to blame for electing trump. These types of bland policy positions squashes excitement on the left. Not only does it decrease liberal turnout, it also increases the "protest vote".

I think the protest vote is middle of the road folks that hate the idea of far left or right policies. So going way out either way can lose a candidate an election.
