The fact is, the overwhelming majority of immigrants throughout American history--most of the forebears of those not Indigenous or descended from slaves--fall under this category. It is not a crime to seek a better life, but it will now be treated as such. Terrible decision.

While I find them despicable, these laws have been in place for decades. When I brought my Canadian husband back to the US with me in '96 my dad had to provide 7 years of tax returns to prove he could support us in case my husband lost his job, so that we wouldn't go on welfare.
