I was recently commiserating with someone I knew ages ago about how as teens, we really thought nearly everything was fixed, climate change would get handled like the ozone hole, and now it was just mop up on the racist/homophobic stragglers.https://twitter.com/michaellorg/status/1308267097106022401 …

I’ve decided the truth of Gen X is that we were all promised as we entered adulthood in the early 1990s that the we were “watching the world wake up from history” and pretty much the last 30 years has been disproving that on an extremely regular and ever increasing basis.

Honestly, I’m not even disappointed in my younger self. We were smart and sheltered and believed in Science. The Berlin Wall had just fallen. Everything could be fixed with aid concerts (except, ironically, AIDS.)

It’s easy to roll my eyes now, but what else could I really have been, with the information given to me?

I think the first crack in that was probably Tiananmen Square. We’d seen the movies, we knew how it would end, of course the protesters would win and China would become a democracy and then there would be another movie, probably with Matthew Broderick. Except it didn’t happen.

That was 89, we shook it off. Things were going to get better! The second time around it would work...surely... Anyway, it’s no wonder we eventually became grim, tired cynics. Nothing gets as cynical as a crushed optimist who’s been lied to.

Right? I still keep whispering to myself that this is an extinction burst, not an irredeemable regression, but damn am I hard to convince.

There was a brief window where i kind of believed/hoped that Bush 2 was the extinction burst and Obama was us coming out of it (probably like a lot of people.) I wonder how many "extinction bursts" you can have before it's not actually an extinction?

It occurs to me that we are the last generation to remember when the United States was not at war with anyone.

As adults maybe. Millenials originally meant those graduating highschool around the turn of the millennium.

I can't say I ever quite thought everything was fixed, but I figured our lot would be an endless wheel-spinning middle ground corporate hell-scape and not this frothing stupid racist mess. I basically put too much faith in corporations controlling everything, which is sad...
