I wanted to help families of children with special needs and right many of the wrongs my brother experienced as a student with intellectual disabilities in public school.

On the first day of school, I met the boy who would become my son. He had lived with a caregiver his whole life, and she was losing her battle to cancer. We started by helping the family with odds and ends, after-school tutoring, buying him toys, and a trip to the movies.

Three months later, his caregiver asked us to take him home and do as she had done from the day he was born. She asked me to raise him as though he was born out of my body. We have been a family for 3 years now.

In those 3 years, I've watched him learn to read, become obsessed with Pokemon, and listen to “Old Town Road” on repeat for hours. Watching him grow up has been the privilege of a lifetime. Loving him motivates me to do more, be more, and give more every day.
