You personally do not have to identify as queer if you don't want to But you can take the word queer from my flaming sparkly fingers and if you succeed in doing so my corpse will reanimate just to say "queer is alchemy. We took what harmed us and made resistance, a party, Pride"

I get that some people want words to very specifically delineate their orientation (s) I (and others) need a word that means "look it's complicated but yes I am loud and proud" That word is queer. Or sometimes, genderqueer. Deal with it.

Queer is one of the precious few words I can use to describe my sexuality without feeling like it needs to have an asterisk and a wall of text in tiny font explaining how the word fits in X scenarios but not Y and I'm sorry it's confusing, I just don't know what to call myself

Queer also makes me, personally, feel happy, like maybe my cat just stretched her toe beans out and then yawned real big Or I settled into a real soft pillow fort and it's like I'm in a hug So I need people to stop trying to give it back to the haters with this slur talk, jfc

I get that language can reveal underlying systemic problems but maybe we could redirect some of this "queer is a slur" energy to, idk, "misgendering people is bad" Just a thought

My personal rule of thumb is to respect the identity a person or group of people tells me (except N*zis) If someone tells me their identity is X, I'm going to try my best to use that word, because it's their identity, their choice Magic

This is time and energy I could be devoting to disability justice or writing my legislator or yelling at Stonewall about their ADA violations But instead we're having this conversation, again, because I know it hurts queer people when folks are all "queer is a slur". S t o p

Look I know when we come out no one gets visited by the head fairy with a pamphlet on community history and mutually agreed upon terminology But queer is good and pure, and if it's not for you I'm sorry but stop trying to take my identity away it's exhausting

Think of how much time we could all save if people stopped punching down on more marginalized identities in the LGBTQIA+ umbrella. If the only microaggressions were coming from outside the community. Maybe I could even finish my novel

I see this thread has gained enough traction that people now want to QT me and yell about how my identity is a slur, always and forever, words never get used in multiple ways depending on the speaker So that's fun, I hope they enjoy being blocked

For example, in this thread "take away" is not used literally but intended to convey "look it's fine if you don't like the word queer and i love it, but if people bring up queer being a slur when I come out or mention my identity it's gross"

Solid discourse : I don't like the word queer and please don't use it as an umbrella word for me. I respect your choice to use it even if I don't agree Please no : queer is a slur and here are 5k reasons why you shouldn't use it and have you considered changing your identity

To the person who tried to explain to me that queer is a slur because it implies people are "weird" YES. THIS IS PART OF WHY I LIKE IDENTIFYING AS QUEER You do not have to use the word to refer to yourself But I like the air of "I'm weird and I like it, fight me"
