Of all my publications, this article is the one I am the most proud of. It asks, "Why did the national government wait over 100 yrs before it took control of immigration from the states?" Took me a full yr w/ no teaching duties but all service in effect.

I hear a surprising number of smart people saying things like "The Trump presidency hasn't been as bad as I expected," when they really mean that it hasn't impacted them and people exactly like them. If that's you, I beg you to expand your empathetic imagination.

Friends, my co-author and I worked VERY hard to raise funds so this article is free to the public. Please read and share widely. We get no compensation for “clicks,” just the benefit of public knowledge.

Couching immigrant enforcement as an attempt to prevent 'human trafficking' is dishonest. Want kids to show up to court and to ACTUALLY be protected from exploitation and trafficking? Give them lawyers.

Anyone read Russian? Few days ago I provided an interview to a Ukrainian magazine, NV, on Trump's birth tourism changes. The journalist sent me the article she interviewed me for and highlighted the parts of my interview in yellow.

"Political scientist David Mayhew termed such moments as actions in the public sphere or stances that 'register in the collective public consciousness.' These are the central bits of legislative action— speeches as well as votes — that seem politically consequential at the time."

Federalism & con law tweeps, I don't know the relevant case law as well as you. Is this going to run into anti-commandeering and how will courts likely rule? (and yes, I have Global Entry and live in NYC)

I would love to see more mid-career awards. We are tired and need the encouragement. How about one for a slightly-above-average academic who manages to publish, teach, and service reasonably well without everything falling apart?

Male students ask for grade changes more frequently than female students, and the result is a grade boost for men.

Awesome new podcast series from looking at the work relationships between some of the most important co-authors in political science, starting with Baumgartner and Jones. Basically, it's Behind the Music but for pol sci nerds.

Liz and Amy have handled the caucus fiasco the best so far. It’s not even close. I just don’t think men have the temperament to be president.

Political scientist here. What I'm NOT doing this week: -watching the SOTU (there's no amount of alcohol....) -watching the Democratic debate -waiting with baited breath for IA to get its act together and for system to pick a more representative state to start with. Inertia.

Mandatory reporting is a bad idea. Here’s why: First, it trades institutional liability for victim well-being. The consequence of mandatory reports is that victims that would otherwise seek faculty support now have no options unless they want the incident(s) reported. 1/17

The thing about the delayed results in the IA caucuses is that ICE is hiding/destroying the number of undocumented immigrants who have died in govt custody or have been abused. And Congress hasn't done oversight hearings.
