Morning! Preliminary data shows the vaccine is 70.4% effective, but tests on two different dose regimes show that that our vaccine could be 90% effective, which is exciting news. 70.4% is highly effective – more effective than the average flu vaccine

Yes, but has it been tested long enough to assure the public of it's safety? That is the real key concern that is going to cause issues for majority taking it. What assurances can you provide this meets normal timescales for introduction of a new vaccine?

All normal tests have been done to normal timescales and with increased numbers of volunteers. The reason it's happened so quickly is it got bumped to the head of the queue for all the funding, regulatory and legal reviews that can take years but in his case took a week.

So, given that the trial participants were not deliberately exposed to Covid-19, whether or not they became exposed “in the wild” is down to pot luck, isn’t it? In those circumstances, what possible validity will the results actually have??

What matters is that the chance of vaccine participants still have the same chance of encountering it as non-participants, so you can compare the rates of infection. If you have enough participants you can calculate the amount of confidence in your data - this is 'beyond doubt'
