Author's legacy captures interesting tension : William Alonso wouldn't define himself as econ. Trained in architecture & city planning, got 1st 'regional science' PhD, headed urban studies then population Harvard center. Yet produced a model that became foundation of urban econ

📽 Rare archive footage of John Maynard Keynes! Keynes hated the Gold Standard (“a barbarous relic”!), so here he is talking about the positive implications of scrapping it. What economic policy would you get rid of?

[1/N] New paper reviewing "Dynamic Taxation." Summarizes the key approaches, provides intuition for their main findings (especially about capital taxation), and covers the basic techniques and methods. Thread below to summarize and comments welcome!

Case studies show how soviet econs' tools, theories (linear programming, input-output, theories of institutional change etc) & values can paradoxically be recognized as 'economics' though 'market' principle, common disciplinary identity &a-politicization were absent

(note that they explicitly reject my comparative agenda). Their aim is to debunk dichotomies usually summoned to think abt science under socialism : dogma vs reason, knowledge vs ideology, ideologues vs rebels & victims

Reason why latest HOPE volume () edited by & Till Düppe, is such essential read is that it provides answer through a series of case studies documenting how it was to be an economist in late/post-stalinist Eastern bloc

Awareness that general equilibrium theory, cost-benefit analysis or mechanism design are all tied to debates on how state vs market calculate & history of western capitalist economies brings one question: how ≠ was production & uses of econ knowledge in socialist countries?

Messy thread on William Alonso, disciplinary boundaries and the elusive identity of urban economics (you'll get a lot of those this semester)

He concluded that his "regional science" was distinct from economics, would retain ambivalent stance toward disciplines. Wild speculation: uncertain status of urban econ might derive from gap between intellectual vision & lack of institutional drive of workhorse models authors

3rd, the approach was one of system. He then run into the issue of defining the boundaries of regional science. A discipline or a common denominator? He identified boundaries in study of location, transportation & natural resources

And the intent, Alonso continued, was "science" which he defined as "a search for laws of wide applicability" "The object of the scientist is to know rather than to do" so that "regional science is not a variety of human engineering" (though he hoped would be useful to planners)

Alonso's grad student writings shows he was struggling w/ disciplinary identities: "core of discipline is characterized y its subject matter, its intent and its approach, aka the what, why & how" His subject matter was "region" aka "space" (though term sounded too Sputnik-like)

What he did (coincidentally w/ Muth at Chicago) was solving program with land price in constraint & distance from city center in utility to include choice of location, derived bid price curves for individuals & firms & equilibrium. And yet, he never aimed at creating econ field
