@ZoeQuinnzel though to be fair, my favourite writers do generally switch up the stereotypes or subvert them.

@benfromcanada It's still operating on the same paradigm though and it's happened so much it's cliche at this point -
@ZoeQuinnzel even when they do something really different, it just ends up a new cliche. Case in point: Drizzt Do'Urden. -
@benfromcanada Yeah exactly. Make a game in the Dark Sun setting or something! -
@ZoeQuinnzel a good first step is removing class race & alignment restrictions. I want to play a chaotic dwarven Druid, god damn it!

@ZoeQuinnzel If you're pointing at Tolkien, I would argue that his races had personality. -
@ExpedientTurnip They did but it was ONE personality per race -
@ZoeQuinnzel I guess what I'm saying is that Tolkien's characters weren't all archetypes, but fantasy now has fallen to that -
@ExpedientTurnip yeah that's more what I mean - it's gotten distilled in to a cliche singularity -
@ZoeQuinnzel Ok, but don't try to pin Tolkien under that failings of others. I got his back .-.

@ZoeQuinnzel I like where this is going... Switch up some stereotypes! -
@AlecShobin seriously! Or at least make some new archetypes and have more variance in personality from elf to elf

@ZoeQuinnzel And humans are so malleable and openminded (if they're protagonists)! This is all Tolkien's fault. -
@DrydenGG Exactly. But come on, we can stop ripping off his worldbuilding now

@AlmostApollo Yeah, that was one thing I thought they did interestingly.

@ZoeQuinnzel I'm still irritated you can't play a fat person in most RPGs. Can't even play a fat, drunken monk in Jade Empire! -
@Worthless_Bums Jade empire would be such a good game for that too

@ZoeQuinnzel Someone mentioned recently how Tolkien fantasy has such resonance/longevity because it conforms to ubiquitous racist worldview. -
@BooDooPerson Well yeah. Women do very little, you know who is bad based on race, it's a "return to a simpler time" -
@ZoeQuinnzel 'Middle Earth will rise again' bumper sticker on the back of a pick-up. - 1 more reply
