@ZoeQuinnzel watching gamecenter CX, it blows my mind how often old manuals had ultraspecific info about how to get past tricky sections

@TomSmizzle I'm going through Masters of Orion 2's more than 100 page manual right now haha -
@ZoeQuinnzel it's why i'm glad GOG gives you PDFs of manuals. speaking of which i got star control 2! you were recommending that, right? -
@TomSmizzle YESSS. But wait you paid for it? -
@ZoeQuinnzel i got 1 and 2 from gog for like £1.50 in a sale. did i just buy some freeware? -
@TomSmizzle google "ur quan masters". The game's code has been open source for a while -
@ZoeQuinnzel haha, oops! well now i have access to the sweet sweet PDF manual, guide and starmap -
@TomSmizzle the starmap is kinda worth it. I suggest saving it as a jpg because you might need to take notes - 1 more reply

@ZoeQuinnzel the weird thing is, some of the games that do the best job teaching through play are from the "RTFM era" -
@andrewtraviss Out of curiousity, which ones? (this came to mind while reading Masters of Orion 2's 100+ pg manual) -
@ZoeQuinnzel Megaman X and Super Mario Brothers 1 and 3 are the ones that come to mind. Nintendo has actually gotten worse at this over time -
@andrewtraviss Yeah, the mario games were great at this.

@ZoeQuinnzel It got SO MUCH BETTER. Although, there was a time before manuals too, like Mario 1 and stuff. -
@agentmaine Yeah, games were less complex back then and didn't really need them. -
@ZoeQuinnzel I dunno if I agree.@auntiepixelante and 1-up have done write-ups of 1-1 as an excellent lesson in implicit tutorialization. -
@agentmaine@auntiepixelante I'm more talking about the difference between Mario and say, any build and conquer that came after though

@ZoeQuinnzel@hannardynamite is doing her dissertation on this very topic. Hopefully, she finds a happy middle-ground. -
@dedhedzed@hannardynamite That's really cool! I have a half-written article I'll never finish about it, haha -
@ZoeQuinnzel If you're interested, I'll be posting regular updates about my research soon. - End of conversation
