There is something called international wire transfer. Usually the sender has to pay between $20-$50 extra to send the money that way (depending on the bank). I would understand if they don't want to use International transfer for an small sum but $6,000... is a joke.
Those international bank transfers have to be cleared by the government in China and that's no easy task. I lived there, I know.
