I just went to get my son’s Epi-pen prescription refilled and was told they’re out of stock due to a “national shortage.” ...is this actually a thing???

early onset pricegougerism?

It's insane, right? I stuck one in my leg when I was 16 and was going to have my 13YO sister drive me to the emergency room afterwards, the least bit of worry was having an Epi-pen in the first place...............

I used to work for the pharma company that made EpiPen. The drug was available and priced at less than $100 for a 2-pack. Mylan, which sells the drug now, bought it in 2007 and jacked up the price to more than $600. The shortage is a "mystery."https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanchi/article/PIIS2352-4642(18)30344-4/fulltext …

BS. I don't know what the stable shelf life of an EpiPen is, but I doubt it's forever. Many good through dates are best guesses influenced by desire to sell more. That doesn't mean they are all false. And there was no issue until the manufacturer f'd up last year.
-
It's not forever but if the supply can be increased by increasing the shelf life it tells me that they were being too conservative in this regard.
-
We're big consumers of this product. The company HAD a monopoly, which it abused, but in part because the FDA and others dragged their feet. The company's CEOs dad is a US Senator.
-
All of which at best "just" look bad. And I didn't know about the Manchin connection either; just read up on it from another post. Something's not right and for a lifesaving drug this level of secrecy from the manufacturer isn't appalling.

Ive been told by a relative who is a pharmacist that epi pens do survive quite a bit longer than the 1 year suggested. Typically if you're within 12-18 months, it's fine. If you're starting to come up on 2 years, it's definitely time to replace it.

Or rather, what happens in the absence of capitalism. Prescription pharmaceuticals do not operate in a free market, unlike over-the-counter medications which experience normal capitalist market forces and do not seem to experience major shortages or price gouging.
