Hugely important case being argued today by team ACLU on holding prosecutors accountable for abusing their powers. This lawsuit goes after the New Orleans DA office, one of the most corrupt in the nation: via

And while Trump has united families under the First Step Act and clemency, he has ripped apart many more families through his immigration policies that are heartless, extreme and racist. No, Trump, you are not a reformer. 4/4

He has appointed Attorneys General who were some of the early architects of mass incarceration & who have directed subordinates to go after extreme sentences & make it even harder for people to get out of prison, including people who should be out by any objective standard. 3/4

Trump has doubled down on the war on drugs, rescinded procedures that protected students from the school-to-prison pipeline, gutted the DOJ unit responsible for holding police accountable, and has pushed for more death penalty, more stop-and-frisk and more militarized police. 2/4

THREAD: Trump is taking credit for the First Step Act. I'm ok with that. It wouldn't have happened w/o him. HOWEVER, Trump is not a criminal justice reformer, because he has advanced policies that have actually expanded mass incarceration. 1/4

FYI, crime was falling long before President Trump took office. Crime has been steadily falling in the United States since the early 2000s. We were living under historically low crime rates before Trump, and we are living under historically low crime rates after Trump.

“When you know you can’t vote, you remove a certain segment of people from the political process.” 42,000 Iowans, or 10% of the Black voting-age population in the state, were disenfranchised, denied the right to vote yesterday. This is not a democracy.

A good reminder during the Iowa caucuses and always: Voting is a RIGHT, not a privilege.

With Tim and Scott and an ACLU group at the caucuses to bring attention to the ACLU’s Rights for All campaign. They’ve gotten candidates on the record on this and other issues:

So proud of the ⁦⁩ team out in the highlighting the fact that thousands of people who are living with a criminal record are not allowed to vote in the state. This is NOT how what democracy looks like.

Glad to see Andrew Yang support legalized marijuana, but he is one of the few remaining candidates who has refused 2 agree 2 our request 2 pledge 2 cut the incarcerated population by 50%. Yang needs 2 go much further 2 truly begin ending mass incarceration

More than 4,000 people are sentenced to life without parole in Louisiana. This is the highest rate in the nation. Their only relief valve is clemency, and we need more of it.

1967 Presidential Commission: “By and large, money bail is an unfair & ineffective device. Its glaring weakness is that it discriminates against poor defendants, thus running directly counter to the law’s avowed purpose of treating all defendants equally”
