First it wasn’t “French” it was Norman French, a related but different language. And second, while Norman French was the language of the courts/elite, the concept of an “official” language didn’t exist at the time

Yes. The Romans invaded Britain in 43 AD. Their empire had ceased to exist in Western Europe centuries before the Normans invaded in 1066, introducing their language

In between those dates the Anglo-Saxons settled in roughly the area now known as England, introducing Old English. And the Norse later conquered much of the British Isles, their rule being especially strong in northern England.
